Turn a recording into a reliable automated test
Add checks and repeatable setup to generated browser actions.
Use generated actions as the starting point for a test. A useful automated test also needs an expected result, stable setup, and a clear failure signal.
Define the assertion
Section titled “Define the assertion”Write what the test must prove before editing the script. For the supplied card-board recording, check the destination lane and whether the Blocked badge clears.
An action completing without an exception does not establish that the feature works. Add assertions in your test project; Recorder does not provide an assertion editor.
Define the sample’s regression assertion
Section titled “Define the sample’s regression assertion”The sample recording moves a card into Blocked, then In progress, but the badge remains. A useful test must first find that card in the destination lane and then check the badge is absent. Otherwise an absent card can produce a false pass. Its generated scripts contain actions without these assertions. See adapt the sample recording for the concrete setup and locator review.
Review locators
Section titled “Review locators”Replace ambiguous or unstable selectors with locators that identify the intended control reliably. Check repeated labels, dynamic identifiers, iframe boundaries, and component structure against the application.
Compare locators across the supplied script, steps.json, and the application’s current markup, then verify them against the test environment. A generated selector is a candidate, not a stability guarantee.
Make setup repeatable
Section titled “Make setup repeatable”Provide safe test data and the required authentication, permissions, and application state. A generated initial navigation opens the starting URL but does not recreate its prior state.
Keep secrets in the test project’s approved configuration. Arrange cleanup for data created by the test and isolate it from other runs.
Wait for observable conditions
Section titled “Wait for observable conditions”Wait for the response or UI state the next action depends on, rather than adding arbitrary delays to match the original recording. Use your framework’s supported locator and assertion mechanisms. Playwright’s retrying assertions are one example; see its assertion guide.
Verify repeatability
Section titled “Verify repeatability”Run the test from a clean starting state, then repeat it. Check that it fails when the expected behavior is deliberately unmet in a controlled test scenario. Investigate intermittent results rather than increasing every timeout.
Review unsupported or missing actions against the original test. Only the retained recording segment was exported.
Choose an export
Section titled “Choose an export”Follow Playwright, Puppeteer, or Chrome DevTools Recorder. Recorder does not run the resulting suite or synchronize its results to a TMS.
